Working at Barnes & Noble again puts me back on the front line of the culture war again!
First of all: Happy Holidays! That's the first thing that I'm aggravated about. When I'm at the store (or in general to people I don't know) instead of saying "Merry Christmas!" because it's "religious neutral." I like saying "Happy Holidays" because, I think, it is respectful of the possibility that the person that I am speaking with might not necessarily share my religious beliefs but this year though I'm being met with this amazing backlash. It's the norm this year for my telling someone "Happy Holidays!" to typically be met with "No! Merry Christmas!" and, frankly, its pissing me off.
Now, here's the thing. When I'm Johnny-at-the-Counter at Barnes & Noble, I've just finished ringing out your order and the line is twenty-five or thirty people deep, let's be clear here, my goal in wishing you a "Happy Holidays" is to respectfully wish you a "Happy Holidays" in such a way that won't offend you. That's all. It's not a call to arms against Christmas despite what your pastor, priest or FoxNews may be telling you. Furthermore, I don't really NEED or even CARE if you're Christian, so your insisting that "Merry Christmas!" is the way to go is virtually meaningless to me. I repect your privacy and I respect your relgious beliefs and all I ask in return is that you a) do the same for me in return and b) don't get angry at me because I am catering to a wider group of people than you are willing to acknowledge.
What I simply fail to realize is why, in a country DOMINATED by Christianity, Christians feel the need to pretend that they are being persecuted still. No one is burning you here and I don't see anyone being fed to the lions and this point dovetails with the SECOND thing that is annoying me.
Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS. Specifically, THE GOLDEN COMPASS movie and book.
The sheer volume of these books that I've been seeing returned is actually pretty high. Adults who've been buying them for kids for Christmas and are now returning them on account of their perceived Atheist slant. I've read the books and I'm here to tell you that they are probably worse than you think they are but JUST BECAUSE A BOOK CHALLENGES YOUR FAITH DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS EVIL!
Where are the days gone to when people could look at and understand other peoples' points of view and reject or assimilate those views into their own beliefs after some bit of rational consideration. Where's the critical thinking, the empathy, tolerance, and willingness to be openminded? I just don't get it. THE GOLDEN COMPASS was an okay book (the sequels were a little better) but yes, they are at LEAST agnostic, and I'd probably argue that by the time the protagonists accidentally kill God and the Metatron has gone on a rampage and murdered people, the book has probably crossed over into some level of atheism.
But that having been said, some of the things that Pullman pulls out of his hat in those books are more creative than you're going to find anywhere else and to simply label them as atheist is both inaccurate and overly dismissive. I'm not saying that 8-year-olds should be reading them and I would say that if your kids are reading them, you should probably be reading them too because they are definitely books that need some guidance to get through, but screw all the Bluetool soccer-moms out there and their overblown, FoxNews inspired moral indignation. Get down off of your high-horse / SUV and put on your thinking caps before you inspire a flock of mindless Christian clones that can follow real good, but can't think their way out of a bag.
Happy holidays,
Jason

BRRRRRRRAVO!
Truer words were never spoken.
Thank diety that we are open minded enough not to be catergorized int eh cucumber up the ass soccer mom bitches.
By the way - The bible also tells stories of Cain killing his brother Abel. Of beadings on birthdays as gifts, war and bloodshed. Plus, we would both have to admit that Revelation would cause children nightmares beyond belief and will be scared into thinking a certain way as well.
And here these bitches are worried about "athiesm" in the books. What about Harry Potter? In Christianiaty, isnt Majik considered a mortal sin???
Just food for thought. Good Post ny the way. Sorry you deal with such douchebags.
The Christmas ("holiday" haha) retail season made me want to kill myself, every. single. year.
By the way, I have first editions of all of the Golden Compass books and have been trying to sell them for a couple of years... anyone interested??????
by request i am posting my thoughts...i do realize i am making myself vulnerable for feedback but...so be it. =)
as a literature enthusiast...i am forced to have an open-mind (which is ok by me). as a christian...i choose everyday whether or not i behave like a christian according to God's word. it's a constant struggle (for ME) to uphold my beliefs in my faith and honestly what i read is a major influence on that. written words are more powerful to me than someone ranting on about blah blah blah. i can walk away from someone's verbal intrusion on my beliefs....but reading their thoughts and insights seems to dance around in my mind much more. but that's just me...and yes i will have to say i have hopped on over that "perceived culture war between "christian America" and everyone else" fence and taken my stand against The Golden Compass. I will say it was a harder fence to hop over with Harry Potter simply because it wasn't as "blatant" as the act of "killing God". That's my personal decision...I don't stand up and "bible beat" those that don't share the same beliefs. Why I choose not to let my daughter read things that contradict God's word....simply because she's not mature enough yet to understand it all and be open-minded if need be. When she's mature enough then she can choose what literature she wants to read. As far as the "christian America"-ans out there....they all have their reasons....how they choose to act...that's another story.
When it comes to the "churchs' stance" on things....that's mostly denominational issues. As a christian, I don't support "decisions that come from the CHURCH"...because different denominations have different views on non-biblical issues. i support biblical truth only. i choose to go to a non-denominational church...where every decision is bible based. i'm not sure on the what the churches are saying about HIS DARK MATERIALS...frankly i don't care.
bottom line...my biggest beef on church politics...."they" forget that God granted us free-will with EVERYTHING and that includes literature....if a person chooses to read a book written by an athiest woopety woo. being a christian is not about what you allow to enter your mind....it's what you allow to come out of your mouth and what you show with your actions. if you aren't mature enough to process those thoughts and act and speak in a christian manner then you have no business putting yourself in a position to allow such things to negatively influence your faith and beliefs (and that goes for ANY religion). so i choose not to allow my daughter to read things that may negatively influence her "christian walk" because that's my job as a christian mom...when she's mature enough to decipher it all and make her own decisions.....it's all between her and God.
now if only everyone was as perfect as me!!!!! ahahahaha =)
Boy...the Christmas Season sure brings out the best in people!! I would NOT want to work retail at this time of year!! I haven't heard much regarding those books, but I have come across some people who won't let their kids read Harry Potter books (I guess they are afraid they might take up witchcraft or fly away on a broom). I love the imagination of those authors and I don't read them to gain "religious" beliefs, but for entertainment. Not everthing in life should be taken so seriously, people need to loosen up. I agree with you!!
