The Neverending Story

Having spoken to a friend who had recently read the book version recently, I decided to try reading it too. It's supposedly a "classic." I finished it yesterday. It was awful. The movie was very faithful to the first 220 pages of the book. Yes there were some differences here and there, but on the whole it was just as good as the movie was 25 years ago. But the last half of the book was weighed down with endless, heavy-handed moralism to the point that it was virtually unreadable. It was like reading the Narnia books (which I love) but devoid of any real passion on the author's part. The last half was very "going through the motions" and wisely not included in the movie.

I think this may be the first time where the movie was better than the book, but it was. The book was bad. Stay away from it.

Well, I am glad you saved me the trouble of reading it. I wouldn't have wanted to since it doesn't look like that book in the movie with the big medallion on it anyway!! The movie rocks, I am satisfied with that. But you are right...I think this is the first time someone has said the movie is better than the book!!!
