I know, I know. Nobody likes a gushy father who always says, "Oh, by the way Fred, my kid used the big boy potty last night for the first time. . . ." or other crap like that, but I do feel sort of compelled to share certain things, not necessarily because they are "oh so cute" but because I know next to nothing about child development and so therefore I am often surprised by things she does. Things that surprise me I like to share with other people.
And so I share a lot of things with people about Sadie because she surprises me a lot. She's 2 1/3 years old now (give or take) and (as I'm sure most parents will agree) everyday seems to bring some sort of new development or concept that she develops. But yesterday she did something that I honestly didn't think she could or would do yet.
She was sitting on the floor with a Peter Cottontail book on her lap looking at the pictures like she does pretty often. We read to her a lot, but not constantly, only when she wants to and occasionally, I'll make up a new story to go with the pictures as I'm reading to her to make it more interesting for me too. Well yesterday, I was making dinner and, again, she was sitting on the floor by herself reading, I think, Peter Cottontail's Easter or Valentine's Day or something like that, when I heard her say, very clearly, "Once upon a time, there was a mommy rabbit and a daddy rabbit and a baby rabbit and the baby rabbit was very sad and the mommy rabbit said, "Don't cry."
Now, I'm not sure how much more that would have gone on for because I, of course, interrupted her by asking her what she had said. She said it again, but didn't go any further and just started looking at the pictures again.
I'm not a gushy father. I generally hate those but, having said that, I do have to admit that Sadie always impresses and surprises me. I generally try to keep myself working from the assumption that she is average is every way because I really hate it when people put her on a pedestal (like all families do to their kids inevitably) but her telling a story like that to amuse herself surprised me. I really didn't think she was developmentally far enough along to do that.

Don't ever apologize for telling cute stories about your kids - I love hearing them!! You are such an involved dad, it's really neat the bond you have with Sadie!!
That is impressive! And who says nobody likes a gushy father? Anybody that really cares about you and your family is going to LOVE hearing about your childs development and it is always a joy to see a daddy that is involved with his kids.
